The Egyptians used it as an eyewash to prevent and relieve eye infections. The pharaohs and their subjects also seem to have been won over by the aesthetic effect kohl gave to their eyes, and used it to apply make-up. Over the centuries, kohl has continued to be used by Arabs and Berbers as a sunnah practised at the time of the prophet Muhammed (saw).
In Morocco, kohl was used as a skin care product to treat conjunctivitis, irritation and redness of the eye. The use of kohl among Oriental peoples (Bedouins, Berbers and Tuaregs in particular) had a practical reason : to protect against eye infections, but also against the sandy wind and burning light of the desert.
On the seventh day of a newborn baby's life, the midwife would put khol on the baby to protect its fragile eyes from insect bites and conjunctivitis.

The powder is used with the Khôlier and its Mirwed stick (sold with it). Once the bottle is full, insert the stick inside and twist two or three times.
